I find a magic in these old movies where the dialogues tell you one story, but you have a complementary story that they don't tell you, but show you through actions.
After months of forced maturity in chaotic Tokyo, Shinji returned to his childhood home. His cohabitation with the woman he had moved in with was very abrupt, and now she wants nothing to do with him. He was so absorbed in his own thoughts that he didn't notice his mother had arrived: a silent reflection that he only thinks of himself.
When they were dating, the world was perfect: passionate encounters and the thrill of anticipation. But daily intimacy, that deep and constant layer of sharing, had revealed a gap. In the domain of the bedroom, Shinji only wanted to imitate the scripts and quick actions from the screens that, in his ignorance, he believed constituted pleasure. With him, everything was unidirectional.
Shinji's mother felt her son's egoism firsthand: he didn't even ask how she was, or about her health. He only thought of himself, and justified every action he took, as if the world were unfair.
After suffering the onslaught of her spoiled son, Shinji's mother decided to teach him by example.
She denied him everything he desired. Whatever Shinji asked for, he received a no. It wasn't until he asked politely that she gave him what he needed. And just like that, Shinji suddenly understood his egoism and, in that moment, he changed and began to think about others.
The ending is an open one where I believe Shinji will return to Tokyo and his next relationship will be the good one, but being an open ending, the final result depends on you.
